and here we go now by xdragonflyx and here we go now by xdragonflyx
These things are so much fun for me to look at that I figured I'd do one, too!

I didn't really include any life drawing or still life classwork because while it helps hone skills considerably, the subject matter and technique isn't as relevant to my overall work. So here you have personal pieces, commissions, and portfolio pieces.

It's a bit obvious to me that the end of 2007 was my turning point. I was influenced a lot by traditional Chinese paintings and Japanese prints.

Also, I made a LOT of art in 2008. And I mean a lot. It was quite the trip to dig up art from the older years, too. I even had trouble finding files of some pieces.

I like looking at other people's memes of this kind too :)
I noticed we're the same age, but I didn't go to art school - you improved really a lot in those years! Your gallery is really nice, I like the imaginative drawings :)

It's odd... in 2007, you all of a sudden got very good, very quickly... It's like a total epiphany!

Congrats on that.

It really was an art epiphany! And I have my university and professors partly to thank for that.

This gives me hope. Not only did you develop in terms of style, but your composition method has drastically improved since your early years. I think composition is where I really fault, so it's good to know that I can someday come up with intriguing and inspiring works of art (:

I used to think the same thing with my work. And I still do struggle mentally with compositions at times. What I'd suggest is looking at illustrations you think are great, and then study the composition and ask yourself what makes it so appealing to you. Things like groupings, size proportions, positions on the page, etc.

Did they have a good art/illustration program?

Yes, they've got an excellent art & design program with a strong illustration department. The illustrator professor is Ed Wong-Ligda, who is one of the wisest and most level-headed people I've ever met. He has a way of pushing you in the right direction and always says the funniest things unintentionally.

Sounds wonderful. I have been pushing toward going to Cal State Long Beach, because I'm told they have a great illustration program too, but I have been thinking lately of going to an art school like Art Academy in San Fransisco, but good God is it expensive!!

Yeah, and I almost think the price isn't worth it in some cases. Some of the Art Academy's and Art Institutes are extremely pricey, but get away with it because they produce so many great artists. You have to realize, though, that with the sheer amount of students that pass through, there are definitely bound to be some talented folk.

Have you tried going for any scholarships? They definitely help.

You can ask someone at the school if they offer any, both through the school or through private sponsors. They also might be able to give you any info regarding local scholarships offered outside of the school.

O the memories! I remember some of those older works!

It's quite interesting to see how your work has evolved and most exciting to see that turning point!

May you continue to evolve and be passionate about your work! I know one of the biggest challenges is maintaining that same enthusiasm and intense energy that we have when we first start.

lol.

I think I recognize the last pic from the top row! Is that part of the series you did in Mrs. Fisher's class? I was so blown away by that. I was always checking it out when I was cleaning and attempting to bail on my next class (lol I was late EVERY day)

There is a world of difference from where you began to the present! The last three years of your work look like you've increased in your technical ability by leaps and bounds compared to previous years- I can't even believe that those earlier works come from you! Everyone starts somewhere right? College must have been an amazing experience for you. I can see that turning point in your third year when you realized your potential and things started coming out the way you wanted them to. I'm in my second year of art school, and I'm still hoping to find my edge!

Haha, we indeed do all start somewhere! I know college and the art program isn't for everyone, and it saddens me when it doesn't help a person improve, but I am fortunate to have learned as much as I have from my time at my university.

Good luck in you own pursuit! My second year was very awkward, but definitely essential.

Wow! These are always very interesting and inspiring. I can't wait to do something like this once I'm old enough to look back and have enough art to make a point. I lost the majority of my stuff up until two or so years ago. Upsetting. Kind of.
